Life 101 – The Harry Potter Alliance

Young wizards in school uniforms and cloaks

Though Harry Potter mania may have ended a few years back (and been replaced by its cheesier counterpart, Twilight Mania), HP fans are alive and well. In 2005, one Harry fan started The Harry Potter Alliance, a non-profit dedicated to raising funds to stop genocide, hunger, and generally all bad, non-Dumbledore approved activities across the globe. The group is modeled after Dumbledore’s Army, a secret society where Hogwarts students meet in the Room of Requirement to practice spells because Dolores Umbridge…um, nevermind. Today, the HP Alliance has raised over $15,000 in aid for Darfur and Bhurma, donated 14,000 books to children, and registered 900 new voters in the Wizards Rock the Vote campaign in 2008. And all without wands.
